Careers Virginia Renewable Energy Research & Organizing Director

270 Strategies is looking for an experienced strategist who is committed to increasing renewable energy growth in Virginia. Wind and solar generation provides clean energy for families and businesses across the Commonwealth and offers jobs and economic opportunities in rural communities throughout Virginia, and we’re just getting started.

We are looking for an experienced organizer to lead our Virginia renewable energy portfolio, supporting on-the-ground monitoring, community engagement, and outreach efforts. The Regional Director will use traditional organizing skills and digital platforms to recruit residents, activists, and community leaders to publicly support renewable energy developments. This position will be based statewide in Virginia and will require occasional night and weekend hours and travel across the state.

The Research & Organizing Director will:

  • Frequently monitor local and statewide conversations around solar and wind development with an eye towards restrictive ordinances, burgeoning opposition or support, and local activity 
  • Develop reports on monitoring activities to be shared with stakeholders 
  • Conduct background research to analyze local levels of community support or opposition towards wind and solar development, public statements by relevant elected officials, and current wind and solar capacity in regions 
  • Develop strong relationships with key community stakeholders, ENGO leaders, and relevant local elected officials 
  • Create content for and manage local social media accounts 
  • Plan and report on weekly activities, upcoming meetings, and events to the National Organizing Director 
  • Plan community events including community dinners and volunteer meetups as needed  
  • Mobilize supporters and activists to show their support during key moments

Desired Qualifications: 

  • 3-4 years of experience in campaign research, community engagement work, or a combination of the above
  • Experience organizing, including recruiting, training, and supporting volunteer-led grassroots organizations
  • Campaign strategy, planning, and volunteer management experience
  • Comfortable working independently as part of a remote team 
  • Enthusiasm and ability to travel up to 25%
  • Experience creating externally-facing, written, and/or visual content for organizing campaigns 
  • Familiarity or excitement to learn digital organizing skills using new strategies and platforms
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Excellent time management & organizational skills and ability to keep track of multiple projects and relationships

Salary:

  • The annual salary range for this role will be $70,000-74,000 with healthcare benefits.
